YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SIERRA LEONE

INTRODUCTION

Youth Employment Sierra Leone ( YESIL ) is a non political, nonregional, nontribal and nonreligious organization. YESIL is a community based organization targeting underprivileged youth groups and vulnerable children within the geographical boundaries of Sierra Leone.

 

YESIL was founded in 2008 by Yusif Bangura ( UN Research Insitute for Social Development ) as a result of experiencing high level of antisocial behavior by youth, violation and human right abuses, food insecurity and sexually transmitted diseases occurring in rural and under privileged communities across Sierra Leone.

 

YESIL is legally registered with the government of Sierra Leone through line ministries ie, ministry of youth and sport, ministry of social welfare, gender and children's affairs including the local government.

 

YESIL has it's headquarter in Freetown and it also intends to established regional administrative structure in the four regional headquarter towns in Sierra Leone.

 

PHILOSOPHY

YESIL believes on the philosophy that since the youth are in the transition period it is necessary to mold their characters/behaviors in order for them to face the challenges of the future positively.

YESIL has it name implies has established a disable training center at Allen Town Market, Freetown.

 AIM

To strengthen the capacity of youth groups to be self reliant and serves as change agents within their communities

 

OBJECTIVES

1-Increases the capacity of youth through vocational skills training

2- Raise the awareness of the disadvantaged youth on human right violations and abuses

3- Improve the capacity of underdeveloped communities to enhance food security

4- Facilitate advocacy on child protection and capacity development

5- Establish and strengthen partnership networking with human right organizations

6- Create awareness amongst youth on drug abuse and antisocial behaviors

 

ACTIVITIES OF YESIL

1-Awareness Raising on Civic Education/Good Governance

a.. By organising workshops, seminars, radio/TV, discussion programs, jingles and drama etc

 

2- Capacitiy building/Livelihood and skills training programs

a.. Literacy and numeric

b.. Conflict resolution, peace building programs

c.. Youth leadership training

d.. Stress management, guidance and counselling

e.. Micro Credit

f..Skills training in Gaga Tie-Dying, soap making, catering, home management, tailoring, meshing, hair dressing, carpentry, black smithy, tin smithy, pottery, auto mechanic, shoe making and computing ( IT )

g.. Scholarship award scheme

 

3- Infrastructural Development

a.. Construction of orphanages, schools, communtiy centers, health centers, water wells, toilets, drainages and roads etc

 

4.. Agricultural Development and Environmental, Biodiversity Conservation

a.. Small holder commercialisation projects, farm for business

b.. Wood lot development for charcoal and fire wood production

c.. Supply or agricultural tools, seeds and fertilizers

d.. Protection of non-timber forest, products

 

5. STD-HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control

a.. By organising semninars, workshops and other activities related to health and sanitation

 

6. Campaign Against Drug Abuse and Antisocial Behaviors
